Top volcanic eruptions in Indonesia in recent years

Mount Kelud

The February 13 volcanic eruption from Mount Kelud which is located some 135 km south of Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia, has once again brought this southeast Asian Island to the forefront of geological activities. Mt Kelud spewed gas ash and debris up to 18 km in the air after eruption, forcing over one lakh people to evacuate. The volcano has calmed down but authorities in Indonesia are not ruling out secondary effects such as landslides in the surrounding towns and villages in the coming few days.

Mount Sinabung

After remaining dormant for almost four centuries, the volcano, based in the island of Sumatra burst into eruptions in 2010. It again become active in September 2013 after staying calm for three years. On 1st of February this year, Mt Sinaburg again came to life by launching a series of eruptions, forcing ash and rocks 2000 metres in the air and claiming more than a dozen lives.

Mount Merapi

It is considered as one of the most deadliest eruptions in recent years. It killed more than 350 people while shooting out jets of boiling gases and rocks. The eruption happened on November 5, 2010.

Mount Bromo

The Ijen Crater at Mt Bromo is sitauted in East Java Island. It erupted in 1999 without magma but spewed lots of ash. The volcano is characterised by a turquoise-coloured crater lake which measures 1000 meters across.
