Top 10 extreme weather events in 2018

Below is a list of all the major weather events that occurred in parts of India during 2018:

1 - Poor Southwest Monsoon performance for the 5th consecutive year. Monsoon 2018 ended with below normal rainfall to the tune of 91% of its long period average (LPA) of 887 mm.

2 - Kerala witnessed the worst floods in 100 years in August, wherein the state recorded 821.9 mm of rain during the month against the normal of 419.5 mm, leading to 96% of excess rainfall

3 - Prolonged spell of Delhi pollution, which made an appearance on November 7 and had been persistent since then. Air Quality Index prevailed between ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ category

4 - India recorded seven cyclones in the year- Sagar, Mekunu, Luban, Daye, Gaja, Titli, Phethai

5 - Mumbai reported deluging rainfall in June (2 spells of three-digit rainfall) and July (6 spells of three-digit rainfall). However, August reported subdued activity, followed by September that saw very poor rains, even failing to record double digit rainfall

6 - Flash flood wreaked havoc in Valsad, Gujarat after incessant rains to the tune 256 mm in span of 9 hours

7 - Phalodi in Rajasthan witnessed hat trick of maximum temperature soaring above 50°C for the three consecutive days from May 18-20, 2018

8 - Severe dust storm had hit Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on May 2, 2018 with winds reaching 126 kmph and killing 124 people

9 - With Northeast Monsoon 2018 failing, Chennai is facing drought conditions with cumulative rainfall deficiency of 55%

10 - Jammu and Kashmir reported 40 cloudbursts in a span of 24 hours on September 6 in Shopian, Harwan and Budgam
