Entire India is reeling under intense heatwave with temperatures soaring above average. Eastern India, particularly, is witnessing extremely hot and dry weather conditions and it has turned out to be the hottest April for Odisha. Titlagarh today recorded its highest temperature for April in the last ten years, blazing at 46.3°C. Titlagarh’s highest ever temperature was recorded at 48.1°C on April 30, 1999.

Other cities of Odisha are also feeling the heat with Sundargarh district sizzling at 45°C and Bhawanipatna touching 44.5°C. On April 11 this year, Bhubaneswar recorded the all-time highest temperature of 45.8°C for this month. Parts of Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand are the most affected regions at present.

The intense heat is primarily due to the dry weather conditions and clear skies. Moreover, in the last few days Odisha and other parts of eastern India have seen no weather activity, and this scenario does not seem to be changing anytime soon. Weathermen at Skymet Weather have indicated that there will be no major relief from the heatwave conditions in the state in the near future.

Odisha usually sees the onset of pre-Monsoon rains in April but this year there will be no early showers in the state. This can also be attributed to the El Nino effect, which is altering the global weather patterns.
