The city of Tiruchchirappalli in Tamil Nadu has recorded 73 mm of rain during the last 24 hours. This is a very rare case as this area lies in the rain shadow area and receives most of its rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon season. However, the city still receives more rains in July than it does in June. Moreover, the annual rainfall of Tiruchchirappalli is much lower than the most stations of the West Coast.
Tiruchchirapalli has recorded 97 mm rainfall in July so far against its monthly average rains of 68.3 mm. This the second good spell of rain witnessed in the month of July. On July 15, 24 mm of rainfall occurred over the city. Otherwise July month remained dry.
As for now, 73 mm of rain in last 24 hours is the highest 24-hour period rainfall recorded after 2008. These rains will be attributed to the development of a feeble trough along the East Coast right from Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu.
Now, we do not expect much rain for next 4 to 5 days. Only isolated light spells anticipated over the city and the weather is expected to remain warm and humid with partly cloudy to cloudy sky.
