Time to pack your bags; pleasant weather over hills ahead

Jammu and Kashmir is the only hilly state in the country that has received 36% excess of rainfall during post monsoon season too.

On the other hand, other states have remained largely rain deficient, where Uttarakhand has remained deficient by 66%, followed by Himachal Pradesh around 23%.

Reason for this large deviation of deficiency among these hilly states can be attributed to the intensity of different Western Disturbances.

Usually, during winters, rain and snow occur over Western Himalayas as a result of an approach of Western Disturbance. This year, two intense Western Disturbances had approached Western Himalayas. The first one was observed between November 1 and 3, while the other around November 12 and 15.

Consequently, these Western Disturbances had given moderate to heavy rain and snow over Jammu & Kashmir while scattered over Himachal Pradesh. However, Uttarakhand had remained mostly dry with isolated rains at the time of presence of these active Western Disturbances too.

At present, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to approach Jammu & Kashmir around December 5. As a result, isolated rains may occur over Jammu & Kashmir.

Moreover, around December 6, intensity of these rains will increase over Jammu & Kashmir while Himachal Pradesh will also receive rain and snow at its few places.

Thereafter, a gap of two days, an another Western Disturbance would give similar weather activities around December 9. Moreover, these feeble Western Disturbances would continue to approach Western Himalayas one after the other.

However, these would not result in bringing heavy rain and snow for at least next 8-10 days. Thus, it is safe to travel towards hilly destinations, as the weather will be at peace.
