April 28, 2016 11:28 AM |

Rain in KolkataKolkata continues to brave hot and humid weather conditions for several weeks now. Though no major change in likely in the sultry weather but the city may see some isolated thunderstorm on Thursday.

According to Skymet Weather, a trough is running from Gangetic West Bengal up to Interior Odisha that may give some thundershower or thunderstorm activity. However, no significant pre-Monsoon rain is expected today.

This activity will not have any impact on the day temperatures but moist winds will increase the humidity levels. As reiterated by meteorologists, it is the high levels of humidity which cause more discomfort.

Kolkata has been mainly dry this April, paving way for the high day temperatures. Day maximums continue to settle above by several degrees on most of the occasions. Mercury had peaked on April 11 with 41.3°C, breaking the highest maximum temperature record in last 10 years.

On Wednesday, Kolkata had recorded day temperature of 38.7°C that was 4 degrees above the season’s average.
With mere 0.4 mm of rain so far, April 2016 is turning out be one of the driest April for the city.

In last decade, April 2016 is the third year where in city has recorded below 1 mm of rain. Prior to this, April 2009 and 2014 recorded 0.2 mm and 0.1 mm of rain, respectively.

With only two more days to go, we do not expect any significant weather activity. However, May is likely to commence on a wet note. Pre-Monsoon showers are likely to pick up pace within the maiden week of the month.
