Two back to back earthquakes hit the Kullu region during the early morning hours today. Both the earthquakes were of a medium intensity and occurred within a span of 20 minutes. While the first earthquake occurred at 6:44 am, the other hit the region at around 7:05 am.
The first one measured 4.6 on the Richter scale, and the other one was of 4.3 magnitude. Both the earthquakes occurred at a depth of 10 km. The shallower the depth of the earthquake, the more hazardous it is.
Thereafter, a third earthquake of 4.2 intensity was reported over the same region at about 9:05 am. However, no damage to life and property has been reported yet.
As per media reports, residents of Rampur in Kullu said that several aftershocks were felt and they were scared of going back inside their homes. Several areas of the state including Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Chopal reported of tremors.
Usually, medium intensity quakes do not pose much threat to life and property. However, tents have still been put up in open places as the fear of landslides increase after an earthquake. Heavy rains have been only adding to the fear.
The Uttarakhand and the Himachal Pradesh belt is one of the most earthquake prone regions in the world.
