The state of Tamil Nadu has seen the onset of Northeast Monsoon on October 25. Moreover, hefty rains remained far away from the state for the initial days of the onset of Northeast Monsoon. However, since the last couple of days, Northeast Monsoon has picked up pace and resulted in heavy rains over many parts of Tamil Nadu.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Parangipettai recorded a whopping 168 mm of rains, Tuticorin recorded 168 mm of rains as well, Karaikal saw 111 mm of rainfall, Palaynkottai at 75 mm, Cuudalore 66 mm. Moderate showers were recorded over Chennai at 34 mm of rainfall.

These rains are the first three digit showers over the state of Tamil Nadu and as far as the forecast is concerned, more showers are expected. Pondicherry may also see some heavy showers during this time.

These rains are attributed to the low pressure area over Sri Lanka and adjoining Tamil Nadu coast, which is why rains will be heavier over southern parts of the state. Cities like Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tondi going up to Kanyakumari will also see some heavy showers. These showers will pick up further and are expected over the state for the next three to four days at least increasing in intensity.
