Usually after the departure of Southwest Monsoon and the onset of Northeast Monsoon, rains over Odisha cease. So much so that only if a system makes an appearance over the Bay of Bengal, and that too on the upper half, the region receives some rains.
However, this time, the city of Gopalpur has recorded some good showers in the past couple of days. In fact, in the last 24 hours, Gopalpur recorded a whopping 143 mm of rainfall. This rainfall amount is the highest 24 hour rainfall in the last eight years for the month of November. Before this, the city recorded 158.6 mm of rainfall on November 4, 2012.
Gopalpur’s monthly average stands at 99.6 mm, in just about 24 hours, the city of Gopalpur recorded 143 mm of rains. This rainfall incident is unusual for Odisha as rains are not on the heftier side right from November until the month of May. It is only in June that three digit monthly rainfall begins over Gopalpur.
In fact, on October 30, the city had recorded 81 mm of rainfall and for the entire month, Gopalpur saw 274 mm of rains, while the monthly average is at 186.3 mm.
