Rain has been heavy over Sikkim, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. Also, scattered rain of varying intensity has also been observed over many parts of the aforementioned areas as well.
In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, many areas have received rainfall in three digits. For instance, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya recorded a whopping 387.4 mm of rain. Also, Nongstoin and Jowai in the same state received a good 175 mm and 155 mm, respectively.
Assam, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh also recorded very heavy Monsoon showers. In a span of 24 hours, Mushalpur in Assam received 163 mm of rain, while Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh recorded 138.9 mm of rainfall.
Jalpaiguri, which is situated in West Bengal observed a whopping 149.8 mm of rain. This heavy spell has led to a flood like situation in the city. Incessant rains have resulted in the rising of the water levels in three rivers including Duduya, Karala, Tista and Duduya.
Also, four blocks including Dhupguri, Rajganj, Jalpaiguri, and Mal are under water. More than 2000 people have been severely affected so far with many of them taking shelter in the embankments. Rescue operation has been started by the district administration.
Heavy rains are expected to continue in the region for another 24 hours or so. Also, areas receiving very heavy rain have been advised to exercise caution and be prepared.
