Rains have reduced significantly in Tamil Nadu as the Severe Cyclonic Storm Maha has moved further away from the coast. At 20:30 hrs on October 31, it was located at Latitude 13.3 N and 72.2 E. And it is further likely to move in Northwest direction and may intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclone by today evening.
According to Skymet Weather, the threat of heavy rains over Tamil Nadu has reduced as the Cyclone Maha (despite its intensification) is continuously moving away. Earlier, as a result of this Cyclone, strong southeasterly winds were increasing the moisture and were instrumental in triggering heavy rains over Tamil Nadu. However, as the Cyclone moved away northwestwards, the wind direction also changed to dry south-westerlies.
Thus, only southern districts of the state have witnessed good rains during the last 24 hours. Rest all places have observed light to moderate rains only. According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, Valparai has recorded 22 mm of rainfall, followed by Parangipettai 17 mm and Cuddalore 8 mm in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday.
The meteorologists at Skymet have predicted a further reduction in the rainfall activities today. In fact, the weather would become almost dry with isolated light rain accompanied by one or two moderate spells. The capital city of Chennai would also see light showers only. This trend would continue for the next few days. Thereafter, rains would once again become scattered as the Northeast Monsoon surge would resume.
Maha is the fourth Cyclone in the Arabian Sea to form after Vayu, Hikaa, Kyarr. Usually, the number of Cyclones is more in Bay as compared to the Arabian Sea. This year, however, the tables have turned and the Arabian Sea has seen more significant developments.
