Over 5000 people continue to be stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, which has been closed for the past three days due to incessant rain and snow.
Heavy snow had triggered number of landslides at several areas along Udhampur- Ramban sector resulting in closure of the 300 km-long highway, which connects valley from Jammu and rest of the country.
Vehicular movement has been completely choked as more than one-foot deep snow have piled up on the road. According to some media reports, thousands of people boarding over 2000 vehicles are stuck on roadside without any food and water.
As per local authorities, snow clearance work is already underway. The weather conditions across the state have also improved, but it still might take some time to resume the highway for vehicular traffic.
Inclement weather conditions along with snow accumulation and poor visibility had also disrupted air and rail traffic. Reportedly, train service between Baramulla and Banihal was suspended. Electric supply was also snapped at several places.
A recent active Western Disturbance had given widespread heavy snowfall and rain over the valley that lasted for almost four days commencing from Friday till Monday.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, as the system moved away the skies opened up in the hills, bringing much needed respite from the extreme weather conditions.
The people of the state will now witness pleasant weather conditions, which is expected to last for next three to four days before another weather systems affects the region.
