Kerala-rains8 post

So far, pre-Monsoon month of May has remained good for the state. Spanning from March 1 to May 16, Kerala has received 35% excess rainfall which is 316 mm as against its normal of 233.4 mm.

Now, we are inching closer to the arrival of Southwest Monsoon which is anticipated to make an onset early this year. Kerala being the very first state to welcome Southwest Monsoon season has already been relishing some very good rainy days.

However, the onset of Southwest Monsoon has got some set of pre-requisites in terms of changes in the wind pattern, outgoing radiation and the intensity of rains.

For rains, there are a set of 14 stations that greets Monsoon rains first, 11 stations lie in Kerala.

Let us see the pre-Monsoon activities over all these stations in the last two days:

The table clearly depicts that the rain intensity over these 11 districts of Kerala was more on May 18 and reduced drastically the next day. The activity was widespread with heavy at isolated pockets of the state on May 18 however, the same became mild on May 19.

Meanwhile, the rainfall activity was slightly better than yesterday in some parts but it still was not as good as May 18:

As per Skymet Weather, these rains were on account of the weather system brewing in the southeast Arabian Sea. As the weather system moved away westwards, rains over the state reduced which was predicted by Skymet Weather. This westward movement of the weather system took away the moisture leading to a reduction in the rain spread and intensity.

As of now, the rains would continue to remain light in intensity until the system completely clears the region and shifts further westwards which would take another three days. However, the state would not become completely dry but after taking a break of three days, rains over the state is expected to revive by May 22.

These would probably be the last pre-Monsoon spells over the state as Southwest Monsoon is expected to mark an early onset over Kerala by May 28.
