Thiruvananthapuram has so far received 398.8 mm rainfall in June this year. Out of this, 119 mm rainfall was recorded in 24 hours on June 27. This is the highest 24-hour rainfall figure for the month of June in Thiruvananthapuram in a decade. This year Monsoon reached Kerala on June 5, around 4 to 5 days behind schedule. But thereafter, good rainfall was observed over the west coast due to active Monsoon surge. Monsoon normally progresses from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Out of these two arms, the Bay of Bengal arm remains more active in comparison to the Arabian Sea arm. But this year, we have seen very good rainfall activity all along West Coast, particularly over Karnataka and Maharashtra.
At present, an off-shore trough persists from southern Maharashtra to Kerala coast. It is likely to cause fairly widespread rain and thundershowers over Kerala coast including Thiruvananthapuram. Mostly intermittent rain is likely in the city but the possibility of a couple of heavy showers cannot be ruled out.
