Third successive rainy weekend in North India

March 13, 2015 11:25 PM | Skymet Weather Team

The thing about March is that it lures you in with springlike temperatures, birds with their sweet chirping and pleasant weather with moderate temperatures. But just when you are off guard- BAM– rain splashes all your hopes of that outdoor picnic you had planned or the barbeque surprise for your loved ones over the weekend.

If you were planning to spend this weekend outdoors since plans over the last two weekends got soaked, then there is nothing in offing but disappointment.

This weekend too is going to be dreary, humid kind with endless rain and cloudy sky. The weather will be just less than the bitter winter cold and better than the extremely humid pre monsoon season.

It’s the third weekend in succession when the sun is going to be in a mood to play hide and seek. Remaining mainly confined behind the clouds, the sun and the sunlight are least expected to bestow on residents of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Temperatures in North India

Day temperatures across North India including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh are most likely to experience a dip as light rain begins tonight onwards. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the drop in temperature will be significant of upto 5-7°C by tomorrow with marginal drop of 2-3°C, thereafter. The minimum temperatures on the other hand will observe a rise due to rain. The rise will be 2-3°C over the weekend in plains of North India. Monday will hopefully bring the pleasant springlike weather back in action.

Rainfall and Snowfall in North India

It’s going to be a rainy Sunday in Delhi, Amritsar, Lucknow and Chandigarh. While light to moderate rainfall will shower the cities such as Delhi, Agra and Ambala, hailstorm and heavy rainfall is expected in several parts of Punjab. The rain belt is likely to shift eastwards to give light rain in Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh by Sunday.

The rain is expected to recede Monday onwards, leaving people to look forward to another rainy spell on the next weekend.

While rain is likely to lash plains of North India, the white cover of snow over the hilly states cannot be ruled out. Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh will witness substantial amount of snowfall during this wet spell though it will be light in comparison to the snowfall observed in last two spells.

Rain ravaging crops in North India

The bout of unseasonable rain is likely to give another blow of setback to harvest of wheat and other rabi crops as this is the peak time for harvest of important crops like wheat, mustard, mangoes and gram in several places including Punjab, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The crop has already suffered loss due to rain and is likely to suffer further damage due to rain over the weekend.
