Third consecutive week of excess rain in the country

According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, March 12 to March 18 is the third consecutive week to record excess rain during the month. The cumulative rainfall recorded is 15.9 mm against the average of 6.8 mm, which is 134% surplus. The last two weeks from March 5 to March 11 and February 26 to March 4 were 43% and 358% excess, respectively.

Once again, the only sub-divisions to remain deficit during the week were Odisha and NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura). While Central India witnessed record breaking rain, particularly west Madhya Pradesh and East Rajasthan. According to the data available with Skymet, west Madhya Pradesh recorded 34.6 mm of rain against the monthly average of 1.0 mm, which is 3356% excess. East Rajasthan witnessed 31.7 mm of rain against an average of 0.5 mm, which is a whopping 6244% surplus.

Pockets of North India also witnessed very good amounts of rain. For instance, Punjab observed 21.3 mm of rain against an average of 5.6 mm, which is 281% excess. Similarly, Haryana witnessed 6.1 mm of rain against 2.5 mm, which is 146% surplus. West Uttar Pradesh, with 15 mm of rain against 1.9 mm saw a surplus of 687%. East Uttar Pradesh witnessed 14.1 mm of rain against 1.4 mm, which is 906% excess.

The other two months of December and January were deficit. The cumulative deficit for the country in January was 11%. A marginal improvement was observed in February but the initial two weeks saw very less rain. From February 5 to February 11 the cumulative deficit for the country was 66%. And from February 12 to February 18 the deficit was 60%. However, a gradual improvement was observed with the week from February 19 to February 25 observing a surplus of 28%. From here on rainfall across the country picked up making March the rainiest winter month this winter season.
