Thick fog leads to nil visibility in Amritsar, high diurnal variation between temperatures

In the absence of significant weather systems, the northern plains have been free from any sort of weather activity (in terms of rain). The temperatures, however, are below normal by 2 to 4 degrees Celcius in most places, with mercury even dropping to less than 5 degrees in a few parts. Amidst low minimums, the humidity is high i.e more than 90% in a large part of Punjab.

The winds, in the last 48 hours, have also gone light along with clear sky conditions taking over the region during night hours. All these factors are making the conditions favourable for the formation of thick fog.

Today, the residents of Punjab woke up to a chilly morning and a very dense layer of fog leading to nil visibility in Amritsar. Meanwhile, the visibility dropped to 100 meters in Pathankot.

In fact, such has been the weather condition from the last two to three days. Dense fog during morning hours has been engulfing Punjab and adjoining areas for a prolonged period now.

According to Skymet Weather, although two Western Disturbances are likely to affect the Western Himalayas on February 4 and 6, they might fail to bring any significant activity for the northern plains because of their feeble nature. The only effect that these systems would cause, is the change in the wind direction.

Thus, in the absence of rain, the layer of fog is likely to persist during the morning hours for next few days. The fog density, however, might start reducing as the day progresses. The sunshine will appear leading to an increase in the day temperatures.

On the other hand, minimums are expected to remain on the lower side, even leading to cold wave conditions in some parts of Northwest India. In a nutshell, the diurnal variation i.e the difference between day and night temperature is going to be high for the next few days.
