The rage on Delhi pollution continues, slight relief likely

Smoggy Delhi post

The war on Delhi pollution continues to rage on as the air quality once again dropped to the ‘very poor’ category on Wednesday. In fact, today, the pollution levels in Delhi hit a 10-day high pulling the air quality down. The air quality index once again slipped back into the very poor category with the air quality index measured at 337.

The suspended particulates PM 2.5 and PM 10 were recorded about three times over the recommended levels even as air quality stayed in the 'exceptionally poor' class for the 6th consecutive day. As per Skymet Weather, the areas near the Delhi Technical University (DTU) had the most noticeably awful air quality on Wednesday, with the AQI screen recording PM2.5 at 497. Anand Vihar and RK Puram were two of the most contaminated after DTU range.

As per the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting Research (SAFAR), a marginal relief is in sight. Though the levels dropped a bit on Tuesday due to light wind speed, now a relief from the rising pollution levels is expected.

From the last two days, the wind flow was southeasterly and light, due to this, the pollutants were trapped in the atmosphere and which is why a blanket of pollution was seen over Delhi and NCR. Along with this, the moisture content in Delhi and NCR was also high due to the rising maximums and dropping minimums. Due to all this, the pollutants are trapped in the atmosphere and are not able to emit.

However, today, the wind flow and its direction have changed and the moist and humid southeasterly winds are swapped by the dry and cool northwesterly. In the wake of this, a marginal improvement from the rising pollution levels is expected in the next 24 hours. However, the pollution levels will not reach the ‘severe’ category, a large scale improvement is not anticipated.

On Monday, the Delhi government had again issued a health advisory, asking school authorities to once again take a call on open-air exercises. The air contamination level is required to ascend throughout the following three days in Delhi.
