The curtain comes down on Monsoon 2015

Monsoon in IndiaThe four-month-long Monsoon season officially comes to an end today. The last Monsoon rainfall for the country will be recorded on Wednesday 8.30 am.

The spell of rainfall in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Tuesday will seal the Monsoon rains for this year. Thereafter, any rainfall activity will be accounted for October rains.

As of now, Southwest Monsoon has withdrawn from entire Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and most parts of West Uttar Pradesh. It has also withdrawn from some parts of West Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and North Arabian Sea.

The last week of the Monsoon Season witnessed very poor rains in most parts of the country. Since the last 4 to 5 days, Monsoon rainfall has been confined to Peninsular India, especially Tamil Nadu, Kerala and parts of Karnataka. September 27 recorded the poorest rainfall for the season and received 0.8 mm of rain against the normal of 5.1 mm for the day.

The cumulative rainfall deficiency mounted up to 14.1% as on September 29. The actual rainfall for the last day of the season is likely to be 1 mm against the average of 3.9 mm. Thus, we can conclude that Monsoon 2015 will end with 86% rainfall of the long period average of 89 cm.

June received exceptionally good rains. But, July consumed all the surplus rains and ended with a deficiency of 17%. August performed even worse and recorded 23% less rains than the normal average. September will also remain rain deficient to the tune of 26%.
