Just a day after recording season’s highest maximum, severe dust storm inDelhi-NCR on Tuesday evening brought down the day and night temperatures. This was also the season’s first severe dust storm, which brought much needed relief toDelhiitesreeling under intense heat.
The massive storm picked up at around 5 pm on Tuesday, due to which maximum temperature dropped from 42°C to 28°C in the evening. The temperature dropped further in the night by 8 to 10 degrees.
However, the dust storm had great damaging potential as several cases of uprooted trees and fallen poles were reported from different parts of the national capital. Metro services were also halted briefly due to strong winds.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the storm was accompanied with squally winds of 70 to 90 kmph, reducing the visibility from 500 to 300 meters.
The dust storm, a common weather activity during this time of the year, was also followed by thundershowers. Traces of rain were recorded at several places in the city, while Gurgaon recorded 2 mm of rain.
The night temperatures, which were hovering in the high 20s, dropped to settle in the low 20s on Wednesday morning. While the day temperature witnessed a marginal drop as it had already risen by the time the dust storm activity had taken place.
Heat will again catch up in the city from Wednesday, but the day temperature will not cross the 40 degrees Celsius mark. Increased humidity levels will not let the temperatures shoot right away but we can expect mercury to soar again on Thursday.
