One of the main commercial activities here includes tourism and the weather definitely complies with its ever growing popularity. Even in the month of April, when most parts of the country is beginning to swelter under rising temperatures, Amritsar remains pleasant during evening and morning hours. However, we cannot rule out the fact that Amritsar experiences extremely hot days with maximums touching 40°C in May and June.
According to latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, yesterday Amritsar recorded the lowest temperature in the month of March, in last 10 years. The maximum was 29.4°C, the lowest since 31st March, 2013 when the maximum was 29.8°C.
The lowest minimum recorded this year in March was 4.8°C, which is much below the monthly average of 11.3°C. This night temperature recorded on the 2nd day of the month was also the lowest since 9th March, 2012.
Reason for record breaking temperatures
This year most of the places in North India received excessive rain except for southwest Punjab. Amritsar is situated in this part and recorded 21 per cent deficit rainfall in the month of March.
Skymet Meteorology Division in India explains that rain is not the only parameter that affects temperatures.
Frequent Western Disturbances last month brought good amounts of rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Delhi also received 34 mm of rain as opposed to the normal rainfall figure of 12 mm for the month of March. The air travelling from the higher reaches can be attributed to such record breaking temperatures in Amritsar.
