Updated on January 20, 2016, 06:30 PM (IST): At 14.4°C, Delhi records season's lowest day temperature
Delhi has recorded season's lowest day temperature on Wednesday, with mercury plunging to 14.4°C at Palam Airport. This is six degrees below the normal average temperature of 20.8°C.
Safdarjung Observatory has also recorded 15.1°C as maximum temperature.
National capital has been reeling under cold day conditions for the second consecutive day. Moreover, no relief is likely from biting cold for at least another two days.
According to Skymet Weather, persistent sky obscured conditions with thick cloud cover did not allow the sun to heat up the land. As a result, the day maximum could not rise beyond 15°C. Besides this, cold and dry northwesterly winds further added to the wintry chill.
Updated on January 20, 2016, 01:30 PM (IST): Temperatures plunge, Delhi's chilly affair to continue
Delhiites are covered up in layers of woolens and those who can remain indoors are staying put. Weather in Delhi has remained cold in last few days and with day temperatures taking a sudden dip of 4 degrees in last 24 hours, the chill factor is likely to persist today and for few more days.
Parts of NCR are also witnessing cold day conditions due to which all government-run schools and some of the private schools up to Class 8 will remain closed in Ghaziabad and Noida for the next three days and reopen on January 23 in view of the intense cold conditions in the region.
At present, the city is witnessing cloudy weather with moderate fog over most parts. This weather can be attributed to change in wind pattern on account of a Western Disturbance affecting Jammu and Kashmir and a confluence zone marked over Madhya Pradesh.
However, both the weather systems are now expected to move eastwards. With this, dry and cold northwesterly winds will return to Delhi and clear weather conditions will prevail over the city.
This will lead to a drop in minimum temperatures gradually and possibly, night temperatures may settle below its normal average temperature.
Moderate fog will continue to grip the city, with dense fog expected at few places. But sky will be generally clear with good sunshine and windy afternoon.
It has been dry winters for Delhi so far in January, with first half of month being exceptionally warmer. Unlike every year, night temperatures, this time have not plunged below its monthly average of 7.6°C except on January 18 that recorded minimum of 6°C.
January is also considered to be the rainiest month of the Winter season, with average rainfall over 20.8 mm. Delhi has recorded no rainfall till now and we do not even expect any activity in coming days as well, predicts Skymet Weather.
