Temperatures in Kolkata drop, indicating arrival of winter

There is hardly anything more comforting than a piping hot cup of tea on a cold winter morning in Kolkata. With pleasant days and cool mornings, winter is the most preferred season in this city.

Winter in Kolkata extends from mid-November to January and peaks around New Years. The first half of November remains above 30°C. November 14, 2009, is still remembered as the hottest day of this month as maximum touched 34.9°C.

Winter crawls in by the second fortnight of November and the first bite of winter is felt as maximums drops below 30°C. Maximum temperature recorded on Friday was 28.8°C and minimum 16.8°C. In fact, last few days witnessed pleasant weather with maximums below 30°C.

Both maximum and minimum temperatures play a role in indicating the arrival of winter. Even a week earlier, night temperatures were below 20°C but have now plummeted to 16°C or 17°C. Humidity has also visibly dropped and is expected to linger around 60%.

Kolkata hasn’t received any rain this month, which receives 30.7 mm of rain on an average. The passage of any Western Disturbance or any storm in the Bay of Bengal reaching up to coastal parts of Odisha generally has the potential to bring rain in Kolkata. But in the absence of any weather system, Kolkata has been dry till now.

The capital of West Bengal is among the most favoured places for many both national and international tourists. The best time to visit Kolkata is the month of December. Music festivals, craft and handloom exhibitions imparts an air of ecstasy in the sprawling grounds of the city.
