A well-marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal near northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coast is expected to intensify further into a depression anytime soon. At present, this weather system is giving heavy to very heavy rain over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and the southern coast of Odisha.
In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Kakinada received 175 mm of rain. Visakhapatnam recorded 96 mm of rain and Kalingapatnam observed 52 mm of rain.
Gradually, while intensifying, this system will move inland and start affecting the interior parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana during the next 24 hours. By tomorrow, heavy rain may also commence over parts of Vidarbha adjoining South Madhya Pradesh. Southern parts of Chhattisgarh will also receive moderate to heavy rain.
Monsoon has already covered all these areas and the region has been receiving light to moderate rain since the last few days. However, heavy showers are yet to be witnessed. During the next 2 to 3 days, there are chances of heavy rain, which will further increase the water levels in the reservoirs and boost the soil moisture.
Vidarbha, South Chhattisgarh and adjoining South Madhya Pradesh are highly dependent on Monsoon rains as they lack irrigation facilities.
