The Western Disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Punjab persists. It is expected to move away in another 48 hours. A stronger western disturbance is expected to affect weather in North India, specially the western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, from the 7th of January.

Weather in Delhi and North India

Today morning South Delhi witnessed smoggy weather condition due to the meeting of two air masses, giving rise to an anti-cyclonic circulation. A trough was formed across east Rajasthan and Delhi by the combinations of warm and humid southerly/south easterly winds from Andhra Pradesh and cool dry winds from central Pakistan. This smoggy weather condition is expected to clear up within 24 hours.

The cold wave conditions over north Rajasthan and Haryana is likely to abate, along with ground frost in the region. The cyclonic circulation over Gujarat and south Rajasthan has moved north eastward and presently lying as a trough over Central India.

Weather in South India

As predicted, the low pressure area in southwest Bay of Bengal and neighbouring areas has become well-marked and is likely to move further westward across the southern peninsula. In the last 24 hours, only Pamban and Minicoy have received traces of rain but this system will affect weather in South India in terms of good showers from tonight. The intensity of rain will increase gradually with one or two heavy spells over the south coastal belt of Tamil Nadu and light showers at many places over Kerala. Relatively warm easterly winds will increase the minimum temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees, to settle between 22°C to 23°C.
