Even though the month of October was rain deficient, the state of Tamil Nadu received good rains during the month of November. Since the beginning of November good rains continued over most parts of Tamil Nadu, including its capital city Chennai.
The reason for these good rains has mainly been attributed to the various weather systems that effected the state in November such as Cyclone Gaja and the well-marked low-pressure area in Bay of Bengal.
Recently, the active easterly wave has also given good rains over the entire state. During the last 24 hours, scattered light to moderate rains with few heavy spells occurred over interior and coastal parts of Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, rain intensity was less over the northern parts.
In the span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Pamban recorded 49 mm of rain, followed by Puducherry 48 mm, Coonoor 46 mm, Karaikal 25 mm, Thanjavur and Cuddalore 23 mm.
Due to these ongoing rains, at present, Tamil Nadu is rain deficient by only 12 percent. Now as the easterly wave has weakened, we expect light rains to continue over Tamil Nadu till today. Thereafter, the weather conditions will go dry.
Another spell of rain is expected around November 4 and 5. During that time we expect many parts of Tamil Nadu to receive light to moderate rains. In fact, on and off rainfall activity is expected to continue till December 7.
Thus, we can say that even though the Northeast Monsoon is going on but still it is not very active over the state of Tamil Nadu. However, we expect scattered light to moderate rains to continue during the month of December as well. Moreover, we do not expect heavy to extremely heavy rains which may cause flooding and water logging in Tamil Nadu. Northeast Monsoon is expected to end with normal rains.
