Both the states, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, have been observing good rains from last two days that has erased the prevailing prolonged dry spell. In fact, a few parts of the states were drenched in heavy rains on Saturday wherein the Pamban district in Tamil Nadu observed over 100 mm of rain.
Moreover, light rainy spells were recorded in both the states during the last 24 hours as well. As on 08:30 am from Sunday, Nagapattinam witnessed 5 mm of rainfall, Coimbatore 2.4 mm, Karaikal 2.5 mm, Kodaikanal 2.3 mm and Madurai also observed light wet spells of 2.4 mm. However, the capital city, Chennai remained dry.
During the similar time frame, Punalur district in Kerala too observed light spells of 2 mm, Kottayam 0.6 mm and some traces of rains were also observed in Kochi.
These light showers can be attributed to a trough of low that persist from Southeast Arabian Sea to the Konkan coast. As of now, as per Skymet Weather, this trough of low is expected to shift towards west. This would result in dry weather to become prevalent once again in Tamil Nadu. However, isolated showers are still likely to continue over the state of Kerala for another 24 hours.
Henceforth, the first week of February for both Tamil Nadu and Kerala will once again become dry. Thus, this will be the last rains in the month of January for both these southern states.
