Heavy rainfall has been recorded along the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu during the last 24 hours. While Cuddalore has recorded a whopping rain amounting to 125 mm, Vellore received a heavy 166 mm of rain. Moderate rainfall has also been recorded at many places. Even the city of Chennai recorded 23.5 mm of rains during the last 24 hours.
These rains are being witnessed in the presence of a Cyclonic Circulation which has formed over Coastal Tamil Nadu as an upper air system. A Trough is also extending along the East coast.
Being a rain shadow area, Tamil Nadu doesn’t normally receive good rains during this season. Yet, only the hilly areas of Nilgiri, Coimbatore and Ooty in Tamil Nadu receive good rains which do not come in the shadow of Southwest Monsoon and humid Southwesterly winds are able to blow over the areas bringing good rains over here.
The rains will occur during the next 24 hours, with moderate spells at some places and isolated heavy intensity at others. The rain activity is likely to decrease thereafter.
These rains would mean a drop in temperatures over the region, especially along the coastal areas.
