Tamil Nadu records heavy Monsoon showers

July 26, 2016 2:27 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Tamil Nadu does not see much rains during the Southwest Monsoon, in fact, it is the least rainy pocket after West Rajasthan during the season. However, we do get to see some good spells of rains in between.

At present, the coastal state is witnessing one such spell. During the last 24 hours, practically all the parts of the state have recorded rain, varying from trace to heavy. Interior Tamil Nadu has recorded heavy rains, while coastal areas including Chennai have received light showers only.

Madurai has recorded 76 mm of rain, which is the highest rainfall recorded in last five years in span of 24 hours. Also, it is the highest rainfall recorded in the entire July in the last decade.

Dharmapuri has also received 61 mm of rain, that is also the highest rainfall recorded in last five years in span of 24 hours.

According to Skymet Weather, Tamil Nadu generally receives rains during two circumstances. First is when, a weather system develops over central parts of the country and trough extends from it, either across Interior Peninsular India or across the East Coast. Other, when, Monsoon goes mild over the country.

Presently, a cyclonic circulation is marked over Marathwada and adjoining areas and trough is running from this system across the interiors of Peninsular India.

With this, moderate rains will continue over several parts of the state, with few isolated heavy rains. Thereafter also, rains will continue over the state but with reduced intensity.

Chennai is also likely to see some light rains during this time.

Tamil Nadu has performed fairly well so far in the Monsoon season. June had ended with high surplus rainfall of 44%, while rains took back seat during July but is still maintaining its surplus status by 4% as on July 25.

Following are the rainfall figures recorded in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday.
