Tamil Nadu records good showers, Chennai misses rainy spell

January 21, 2017 1:14 PM | Skymet Weather Team

As predicted by Skymet Weather, rains have finally made a comeback over the South Coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. Several areas of the state have recorded light to moderate rains and thundershowers during the last 24 hours, with few places recording isolated heavy showers as well.

However, North Tamil Nadu including Chennai which was likely to receive some showers nearly missed the rainy spell despite the cloudy weather.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Cuddalore recorded 46 mm of rain, Nagapattinam 41 mm, Atiramapattinam 21 mm, Pamban 16 mm, Kodaikanal 7 mm, Coonoor 6 mm, and Madurai 5 mm.

These ongoing rains can be attributed to the trough if low that is persisting over Southwest Bay of Bengal along with easterly wave.

Now, the trough is over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean. Therefore, we expect more rains to occur over southern parts of Tamil Nadu including Kerala for the next 24 hours. But northern districts of the state will remain dry with cloudy to partly cloudy sky

In wake of cloudy cover, minimum temperatures may increase by 1-2 degrees with extremely humid weather conditions.
Weather will go dry once again thereafter. However, another spell of rain is expected around January 27 and January 28, wherein many parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai will record good rains.
