Tamil Nadu receives heavy rain as weather system lingers

May 16, 2016 10:43 AM |

rainThe low-pressure area, which was over Southwest Bay of Bengal, intensified into a well-marked low on May 15. Now, the weather system is likely to intensify into a depression anytime soon. Also, its intensification into a deep depression is also likely.

The well-marked low has already given extremely heavy rain over several areas of Sri Lanka. So much so that many areas have recorded three digit rainfall in a span of 24 hours. Tamil Nadu has also recorded heavy rains during this period with many areas recording more than 50 mm of rain.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Pamban recorded a whopping 80 mm of rain followed by Nagapattinam where 65 mm of rain has been received. Other areas to have received good rains include Tondi 56 mm, Karaikal 55 mm, Atiramapattinam 34 mm and Chennai 2 mm rainfall.

Now, many districts in the southeastern parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain during the next 24 hours. Areas including Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Cuddalore, and Ariyallur are likely to record hefty showers.

By late night, many areas in Chennai are also expected to receive heavy showers. These rains will cause disruption to the ongoing polls in the South Coastal and South Interior parts of Tamil Nadu. However, northern parts of the state will be spared as only scattered light showers are expected.

Due to these rains, many areas may also witness water logging. While seas will continue to remain rough, winds will not be of a very strong intensity. However, moderate winds gusting up to 40 kmph can be expected to blow over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu.
