Rains in Tamil Nadu has finally commenced as the cyclonic circulation has intensified into a low pressure area in Southwest Bay of Bengal on Saturday night. The system is now marked around 200 nautical miles east northeast from Colombo, Sri Lanka.
As reiterated by Skymet Weather, South Coastal Tamil Nadu has started with light to moderate rain and thundershowers since last evening.
In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Pallayamkottai recorded 20 mm of rain, Nagapattinam 19 mm, Karaikal 7 mm, Tondi 5 mm, Kanyakumari 0.5 mm and Pamban 0.5 mm.
Humid winds are also reaching up to interior parts of Tamil Nadu where in Coimbatore has received 16.8 mm of rain and Coonoor 16 mm.
The weather system is likely to further intensify into a well-marked low pressure area in the next 36 hours and subsequently into a depression. During this time, it will move in northwest direction closer towards the Tamil Nadu coast.
We expect that the system will start giving rain gradually over more parts of the state during the next 24 hours.
Chennai is likely to witness rain May 16 onwards. Initially the intensity of rains will be light but will increase from May 17.

Skymet Weather predicts that the state is likely to record fairly widespread moderate to heavy showers from May 17 to May 19.
