The state of Tamil Nadu is a weather-sensitive pocket that experiences different flavors of seasons throughout the year.

Pre -Monsoon

The period between March and May is the pre-Monsoon season for Tamil Nadu. The weather remains active and a few good spells drench the state.

Southwest Monsoon

Between June and September, Tamil Nadu experiences subdued Monsoon conditions. The rainfall activities remain on the lower side, barring few occasions when significant systems develop and give good rain.

Post Monsoon or Northeast Monsoon

Post- Monsoon or Northeast Monsoon is the most active season for Tamil Nadu. Rains start showing up in the month of September itself and heavy to very heavy rainfall is seen from October to December.

Winter season

January and February are the leanest months for Tamil Nadu. The weather remains inactive and the state hardly experiences the touch of winter chill. The monthly average rainfall is also low, just 17.5 mm in January while 13.4 mm in February. And mostly, the state fails to cover its average also.

The weather overall remains pleasant and comfortable (unlike freezing conditions in North India causing discomfort) with minimums settling in the lower 20s while maximums between 29 and 31 degrees Celcius. Tourists generally prefer to visit the state during this time.

Summer season

May and June are the hottest months for Tamil Nadu as mercury crosses 40 degrees Celcius leading to very warm conditions.

Forecast

Although there are no significant systems in the close vicinity at present, the local weather conditions are making it favourable for rain during the coming days. Humid easterlies might result in light rain on January 17 and 18. The capital city of Chennai stands a chance to experience very light showers with cloudy sky conditions on these two days.
