The months of October and November are the two rainiest months for the state of Tamil Nadu. As per records, October receives 180 mm of rainfall and November receives 170 mm of rains, whereas rains in December takes a dip.
As we observe, seasonal variation is high for the states. For the last 6 years, month of November has been deficit since 2016 barring 2015 when it was largely surplus by 123%. And, in 2016 the state was rain deficit by 80% . It is evident from previous years' records that month of November shows large variability.
Seems like this year also we are on the same track. Since the initiation of this month up till November 19, the deficiency has been around 30%. Till date, the rains have been around 86.5 mm against the normal of 123.7 mm.
As per the experts, now there are promising sign of some wet spells for about 3-4 days, commencing from today itself. It is predicted that on November 21, rains/thundershowers would be at its peak which might reduce by November 22. Moderate rains will be witnessed on November 23 as well.
These rains are in the wake of well-marked low-pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Tamil Nadu Coast. Today, the state can experience fairly good amount of rains.
It has been noted that intensity of rains would be more over the central parts of the state like Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Cuddalore, Pamban and Tondi. The weathermen have predicted that these portions will receive heavy to very heavy rains, thus leading to localized flooding situation.
Earlier the Severe Cyclone storm, Gaja made a landfall near Nagapattinam only. So, these areas were heavily affected during that time and relief work is still on over these places. It is expected that this prolonged wet spell might hamper the relief work.
Good news is that, the state capital of Chennai which was largely deficit by 60% could be on the road of partial recovery because of these rains. It is expected that the city may receive heavy spells.
Since the rains will happen in the later part of the day, the residents are advised to return back home on time today and tomorrow in any case. Chances of strong gusty winds are there which can lead to some damage of life and property. People are advised to take precautions before hand itself.
