Tamil Nadu gearing up for good rain and thundershowers

The Monsoon surge is prevailing over entire Peninsular India. Temperatures have come down to normal levels. Heatwave has abated from the entire region and is not likely to come back anytime soon. On and off rains will be seen over the region during next few months.

As such, Tamil Nadu does not receive much rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon and the main rainy season for the state is the Northeast Monsoon. Nevertheless, we cannot rule out few good spells of Monsoon rains during the four-month-long rainy season as well. So much so, that the capital city Chennai receives more than 60% of its annual rainfall between October and December.

At present, we can see the upper air cyclonic circulation hovering over Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh. This system is gradually intensifying and could start bring rain over Tamil Nadu anytime soon. During the next 48 hours, Tamil Nadu will receive light to moderate rain and thundershowers. Almost entire northern part of Tamil Nadu, both interiors and coasts, will receive good showers.

Thereafter, the cyclonic circulation will become less marked, reducing the intensity and spread of rainfall significantly.

Few places in the state have already started receiving some rainfall. Cuddalore recorded 16 mm of rainfall during last 24 hours while Adirampattinam received 6 mm. Tiruchirappalli, Nagapattinam, and Pondicherry received light rains.
