Tamil Nadu Floods: Numbers That Made News

Tamil Nadu floods will be remembered for a number of reasons. November rains across the state affected lives, industrial output, agriculture, price trends, travel, transportation, tech giants, and much more. Above everything else, Tamil Nadu floods gave back numbers which are a perfect reflection of the situation.

We take a look at some numbers surrounding the floods in Tamil Nadu. These figures include rainfall records, rescue and relief efforts, contingency measures, and compensation amount promised and/or released by the state as well as central government.

Tamil Nadu Rains

1218.6 mm is the amount of rainfall Chennai city has received so far in November. (as on November 30, 2015 at 8:30 am IST)

10 days is all it took for Chennai to cross its monthly rainfall average for November.

345 mm of rain recorded by Chennai in 24 hours on December 1.

Money Matters

Rs. 8481 crore is the amount of damage conceded by Tamil Nadu government due to Tamil Nadu floods.

Rs. 15000 crore  is the amount of damage conceded by ASSOCHAM due to Tamil Nadu floods.

Rs. 940 crore relief package approved by Narendra Modi government for flood relief in Tamil Nadu.

Rs. 500 crore released by Jayalalitha led state government for rescue and relief ops.

Rs. 150 crore is the amount of losses incurred by the bus transportation sector.

Rs. 13,500 per hectare of paddy is the amount of compensation promised by the state government to farmers for losses incurred due to floods. Rs. 7,500 per hectare promised for other crops.

Rs. 4 lakh promised to the next of kin of all those who lost their lives due to heavy rains in the region.

Rs. 110 crore worth insurance claims received by Chennai-based United India Insurance.

Tamil Nadu Floods Scenario

4 lakh is the number of people who were shifted to relief camps by the state government.

587 locations flooded due to Tamil Nadu floods.

70,000 people rescued during Tamil Nadu floods so far.

More than 250 deaths reported in the state till date.

Tamil Nadu Floods: Relief and Rescue

1000 medical camps across same number of locations will screen people for respiratory problems, infections, hypertension, and other medical disorders.

7 Indian services overseeing relief and rescue ops. Local police, fire squads, NDRF, Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, and Indian Coast Guard involved.

More than 5000 kg of supplies air-dropped by the Indian Air Force so far.

NDRF deployed more than 100 boats for rescue operations on December 3.

402 medical units working across the state day and night.

470 pump sets in place to suck out flood water. In addition to this, 75 super sucker machines and 57 excavators are also in place.

50,000 meals are being distributed on a daily basis by a volunteer group named ‘Chennai Rain Relief 2015’.
