In the months of January and February, rains remained very scanty over the entire Southern Peninsula. Situation was no different thereafter also as the first 10 days of March also remained dry and warm for almost all the southern states.

However, now the good news is that rains will soon commence over South Tamil Nadu, Kerala and South Interior Karnataka. In fact, rains are likely to begin over Southeast parts of Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining South Kerala today as well.

As far as the city of Chennai is concerned, here, rains will begin after two to three days. During that period, the city will receive very light rainfall.

These showers will be touted as the first spell of pre-Monsoon season in 2018. These rains will be attributed to the low-pressure area that persists over South of Sri Lanka and adjoining Equator. This system is likely to move in the west and northwest direction and will gradually become more intense with time.

Rain and thundershower activities are likely to begin by today evening, over the coastal areas of extreme southeast of Tamil Nadu and South Kerala.

This activity is expected to increase gradually and intensify thereafter. However, these activities are likely to cover more parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

During the next 24 hours, the coastal areas of South Tamil Nadu and Maldives are expected to witness strong squally winds and the seas may become rough.
