Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to keep witnessing light showers

Showers in Tamil Nadu

Monsoon rains have lashed parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and from last 2-3 days, both the states have observed good rains. During last 24 hours, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh both had witnessed light to moderate showers with heavy rains at a few places.

Rains in Tamil Nadu:

During last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Karaikal observed heavy showers of 52.3 mm, Nagapattinam witnessed 24.5 mm rainy showers, Kodaikanal 20.8 mm, Tondi 12 mm, Coonoor 10.8 mm and Pamban witnessed light spells of 2.7 mm.

Reason for these showers can be attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation that persists over South Tamil Nadu and adjoining Comorin area. Also, a trough is also seen extending from East Uttar Pradesh to Telangana.

This is primarily the reason for a possibility of scattered light to moderate showers to continue over parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai for another 24 hours.

Talking about the rain surplus of Tamil Nadu, it has received at 4% more rains than its normal.

Rains in Andhra Pradesh:

During the similar time frame as mentioned above, Visakhapatnam was 26.9, Anantpur 14.8 mm, Kalingapatnam 10.2 mm and Ongole witnessed light wet spells of 2.3 mm only.

An upper air cyclonic circulation over north Coastal Andhra Pradesh over and adjoining regions has become less marked. This has given widespread scattered light to moderate spells at many places of the state.

In spite of weakening of cyclonic circulation, Coastal Andhra Pradesh is further expected to receive light rains at many places with one or two moderate spells for another 24 hours.

Further, Rayalaseema is also expected to witness scattered rains with a few good showers

Talking about the rain statistics of Andhra Pradesh, at present, Rayalaseema has witnessed 14% more rains than its normal while Coastal Andhra Pradesh has received 5% more rains than its normal.

Though after 24 hours, rain intensity may decrease over both the states but on-an-off scattered showers are foreseen to continue. Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh was witnessing lesser rains from past couple of days. Hence, these fresh Monsoon activities are beneficial for standing kharif crops.
