The wait is over! The list of the cleanest cities in India is out. In the race of who’s clean and who’s not, Mysore has been declared the winner.

The cultural capital of Karnataka is spotless for the second consecutive time.

The Swachh Survekshan 2016 was carried out as a way to measure whether the Clean Mission in India is serious business.

While Chandigarh came second, Tiruchirapalli stood third in the Clean India race. The national capital, Delhi, which earned the fourth spot was also not left far behind.

The list was announced by the Urban Development Minister, Venkaiah Naidu. Other cities to have made it to the list include Visakhapatnam at the fifth spot, Surat and Rajkot in Gujarat standing sixth and seventh, respectively. Gangtok in Sikkim stood 8th; Pimpri Chindwad and Greater Mumbai in Maharashtra earned the ninth and the tenth spot, respectively.

Dhanbad in Jharkhand at the 73rd spot has been labelled as the dirtiest city in India. Others featuring in the bottom 10 include Patna in Bihar, Asansol in West Bengal, Ghaziabad, and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Raipur in Chhattisgarh and a few others. Unfortunately, PM Modi’s constituency, Varanasi has also been listed in the last ten cities.

PM Modi had launched the Clean India Mission in the year 2014 by sweeping a road in Delhi himself. Last year, Mysore was ranked first among India’s 476 cleanest cities. This year’s survey has been limited to cities with at least 10 lakh residents. 22 state capitals were also included in the assessment.

The primary aim of the Swachh Bharat campaign is to spread awareness of the relationship between health and sanitation. The latest survey not only showcases the cleanest cities, but it also raises questions about the ones that are still struggling to become clean.
