Surplus rainfall for Delhi in March, 369% above normal

Delhi Rains

The month of March ended with surplus rainfall for Delhi. Delhi has received 67.4 mm rain against the normal of 15.9 mm, 369% above normal. The reason for this excess rain over Northern Plains including Delhi and NCR can be attributed to the seven western disturbances which approached Western Himalayas during the month of March. Out of these 7 western disturbances, 4 were intense. These intense western disturbances induced cyclonic circulation over northern plains leading to rain activities accompanied with hailstorm and strong winds. Delhi also received intense spells of rain and thundershowers on four occasions. Now the last Western disturbance of March is moving away eastward. It has given scattered rain over Delhi and NCR during the last 24 hours.

Now we do not expect any significant western disturbance to approach the western Himalayas for the next week or so. The weather of Delhi and NCR is expected to remain dry, sunny and hot. The day temperatures which remained below normal, during most of the time in the month of March, will now increase. We expect the maximum temperature of Delhi to reach around 36-37 degrees in the next few days. Therefore, we can say, the dry and hot weather is ahead for Delhi and NCR for the next week. There are chances of scattered rain and thundershower activity on April 8 and 9 but we do not expect much change in the temperature profile of Delhi and NCR during that time also. By the end of April, we expect maximums of Delhi to reach 40 degrees or more.
