Updated on March 29: Ahmedabad, Bhuj, Rajkot continue to scorch; heatwave abates Porbandar, Veraval

Temperatures over many parts of Gujarat have witnessed a drop, however, some regions continue to battle intense summer heat. Many pockets of the state are still observing maximums above or very close to the 40-degree mark. The situation of the coastal stations of the state, where heatwave had caused chaos, has improved and most of the districts have registered the daytime highs in early or mid 30's.

Porbandar that recorded the maximum temperature at 42.5ºC on Monday, dropped down to a comfortable 35.5ºC on Wednesday. Similarly, the maximum of Veraval dropped by 10 degrees from being at a whopping 41ºC on Monday to getting arrested at 31ºC yesterday.

However, the interior regions of the state continued to soar under an above 40-degree mark. On Wednesday, Bhuj recorded the maximum at 41.6ºC, Idar and Amreli both recorded their maximum at 41.2ºC. However, the city of Ahmedabad recorded its maximum at 40.4ºC, on the second consecutive day, making it one of the hottest pockets of Gujarat. Rajkot also recorded its daytime high at 40.9ºC.

The reason for the drop in the temperature profile over the state can be attributed to the change in the wind direction. The northwesterly winds that were blowing over the region were swapped by the southwesterly winds and this resulted in the temperatures to drop.

As per Skymet Weather, the temperatures of Okha, Porbandar, Dwarka, Veraval may witness a further drop. However, the temperatures would remain unchanged over the northern districts of the state.

Updated on March 28: Surat, Amreli, Rajkot continues to battle with heatwave :

Gujarat has been gripped under intense heatwave conditions for the past few days. Moreover, in contrast with the inland regions, the coastal stations of the state are worst hit by intense summer heat, arousing the discomfort levels due to increased humidity.

The maximums across most parts of the state settled beyond the 40-degree mark on Monday. However, by Tuesday evening, the daytime high faced a marginal dip. But despite this, the maximums continued to settle above the normal limits.

A significant change in the mercury levels was witnessed by Porbandar that recorded a whopping 42.5ºC temperature on Monday which was 10 degrees above the normal. However, a day later, i.e. on Tuesday, the maximum temperature of Porbandar got arrested at 38.1ºC which remained 4 degrees beyond the normal.

The other regions that recorded the maximums above 40 degrees Celsius were Ahmedabad with 40.4ºC, Amreli 41ºC, Vadodara 40.7ºC, Rajkot 40.6ºC and Bhuj witnessed 40.4ºC.

Though the temperatures of most parts of Gujarat have reduced, isolated pockets of the state are still reeling under heatwave conditions.

The reason that the temperatures are shooting up in Gujarat can be related to the northwesterly winds coming from Sindh region, Pakistan wherein the temperatures are already soaring high.

Moreover, Gujarat can expect any relief from the rising mercury levels if any weather system develops over or around the region or the winds intrude from the Arabian Sea. As of now, nothing of this sort is predicted.

Thus, the westernmost state of the country would continue to witness scorching summer heat with the mercury levels remaining stable with minor fluctuations for the next 3-4 days.
