Super Typhoon Noul intensifies, to make landfall by Sunday afternoon

Typhoon Noul intensified into a Category 4 storm early Sunday morning, attaining the status of a super typhoon. The system is currently whirling northwestward at a speed of about 19 kmph towards the northeastern part of Philippines with maximum sustained winds of 240 kmph gusting up to 296 kmph.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Noul is expected to make landfall over the extreme northern island of Luzon, Phillippines by Sunday afternoon or early evening.

The strong storm is expected to bring torrential rain along with squally winds, prompting warnings of floods and landslides in the mountainous region.

According to local media reports, thousands of people have been evacuated to relief camps so far. As per the Philippines’ national disaster management agency, several vessel ships have taken shelter in ports due to the rough seas and more than 5,000 people are stranded across the country.

Forecasters predict that the  super typhoon Noul could further strengthen into Category 5 storm, threatening Japan and Taiwan as well.

Taiwan has already issued a warning on Sunday morning as super typhoon Noul neared the island. According to the warning, Noul is expected to batter Bashi Channel and southeastern coastal areas.

This (Typhoon Noul) will be the second storm of the season in the western Pacific to make landfall. Five storms had occurred before this but four had fizzled out in the Pacific waters.
