The residents of North India were enjoying pleasant weather for the past few days. Rainy days were giving the residents the feel of spring for quite long. However, all is set to change as summer will soon spread its wings over most parts of India.

First half of March was relatively cooler due to successive Western Disturbances giving weather over the hills and induced cyclonic circulations over Northern Plains. On and off rain continued over hills and Indo-Gangetic Plains.

Moreover, a trough also persisted from central parts of the country to Tamil Nadu resulting in good rains. Due to this, scattered rains continued over Tamil Nadu, Interior Karnataka and Kerala. Thus, temperatures remained under check.

However, now, the trough which was persisting over South Peninsula is fading away. Also, the intensity of Western Disturbances will gradually start reducing and they will start travelling in upper latitudes resulting in rains only in the higher reaches.

As the weather systems take a backseat, temperatures will start to rise over almost the entire country barring the hills of North India. At regular intervals, Western Disturbances will continue to affect some parts of the Western Himalayas which is why on and off rain will continue in isolated pockets. Meanwhile, rest of the country will remain dry leading to increased temperatures.

Now, as per weathermen at Skymet, rise in temperatures will be steep now. In fact, the present week will witness an increase in temperatures by at least 3 to 4 degrees. Parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana and Rayalaseema will see sweltering conditions. Temperatures here will be in the higher 30s with isolated pockets crossing the 40-degree mark.

As far as the metropolitan cities are concerned, weather will become hot and sultry. Mumbai will witness a rise in maximums after three days when the cool northwesterly winds will be replaced by warm northeasterly. Delhi will witness maximums crossing the 35-degree mark during the next few days. In fact, the possibility of the temperatures reaching around 38 degrees also cannot be ruled out.

Chennai and Bengaluru will also see sizzling heat creeping in very soon. In fact, Bengaluru has already witnessed the highest maximum of the season yesterday at 36 degree Celsius. The City of Joy, Kolkata which was witnessing rains will also see dry weather and increase in maximums.
