Summer peaks in Delhi, thundershowers to usher in relief

On Monday, it was not just the hottest day of the season for Delhi but also the hottest night so far. Safdarjung Observatory recorded day maximum of 44°C, while Palam witnessed 46.2°C.

However, minimum temperatures surpassed 30-degree mark for the first time in the season. Both Palam and Safdarjung Observatories recorded 31.4°C and 30°C, respectively. All the temperatures were 5-7 degrees above the season’s average temperatures.

With the soaring mercury, city was under the grip of heatwave as well as hot day conditions. Heatwave conditions are experienced when maximum temperature surpasses 40°C and is 5-6 degrees above normal average.

While hot day conditions are experienced when day temperatures are 40°C and night temperatures are also five degrees above average.

According to Skymet Weather, it is very common for both the day and night temperatures surpassing 40 degrees and 30 degrees mark, respectively. But what is unusual is the fact that such temperatures are usually seen during the end of May.
For instance, Delhi recorded 46.4°C on May 26, 2015. Similarly, it recorded 46°C on May 30, 2014 and 47.22°C on May 24, 2013.

These abnormally high temperatures can be attributed to April that had ended on an extremely hot note. Thus, in continuation to this, May also began on similar lines.

Weather forecast for Delhi

We can expect some relief from the ongoing scorching weather conditions in span of next 2-3 days.

According to Skymet Weather, we can expect pre-Monsoon activity in terms of thundershowers and thunderstorm or dust storm from May 3 to May 5. Light rain with strong winds is also a possibility.

Though activity will be patchy in nature but on and off rain will keep the temperatures under check, preventing them from reaching to such high levels so early in the month.

May is the hottest month for Delhi as it happens to be in thick of the pre-Monsoon season.
