Substantial rains lash West Bengal, light rains to continue

West Bengal had observed extremely heavy showers in past 24 hours. In fact, most districts of the state also ended up witnessing a three digit figure.

The reason for these hefty showers can be attributed to a well-marked Low-Pressure Area over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand. Moreover, the axis of Monsoon trough is also seen passing through the center of Low-Pressure Area over Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal.

This Monsoon trough is also expected to shift southeast towards northeast Bay of Bengal. At present, Gangetic West Bengal is enjoying 3 percent more rains than its normal.

During last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, rainfall recorded in other districts of the state are displayed in the table below:

Now this weather system is expected to further intensify and is likely to move in a westward direction. Therefore, the rain intensity is expected to reduce gradually over Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. This will lead to a decreased rainfall activity over Gangetic West Bengal.

The weather of Gangetic West Bengal was affected by two back to back weather systems which originated over North Bay of Bengal. After the passage of this well-marked Low-Pressure Area, no further fresh Monsoon activities are expected over the state.

Therefore, not much possibility of heavy showers lashing West Bengal persists, however, light rains are still expected to continue over the state.
