The southern peninsula including Maharashtra andTelanganaobserved very poor rains in July and August due to which the deficiency had mounted in several sub-divisions of the regions. As on September 1, North Interior Karnataka was observing rainfall deficiency of 43%, which dropped to 24% on September 22 due to good rains between September 16 and 22.
Similarly the deficiency in Marathwada dropped to 36% from 51% on September 1. MadhyaMaharashtrawhich was staring at a deficiency of 41% on September 1 observed some good rains last week due to which the deficiency dropped by a good margin to settle at 28%.
Rayalaseema was also deficient by 20%, but good rains pulled down the deficiency in the region to 9%. Telangana saw the deficiency settle at 18% from 25% on September 1. The rainfall deficiency in Vidarbha was 8% on September 22 against 13% on September 1.
By the above figures we can understand that Maharashtra was the best performing pocket this week, particularly the sub-divisions of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. North InteriorKarnatakaalso performed well.
Area wise Maharashtra is very large. Therefore any rainfall variation in the state impacts the cumulative rainfall of Central India as well.
The current spell of rain has also helped in pulling down the regional deficiency to a large extent. For instance, the deficiency in Peninsular India dropped to 15% on September 22, from 21% on September 1. Similarly the rainfall deficiency in Central India also dropped to 13% from 15% on September 1.
The low pressure area, which became a deep depression and travelled acrossChhattisgarh,Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat gave good amounts of rain in Central India.
Now the weather activity in Central India will weaken. However, extreme southern peninsula which includes Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala may expect some good showers in next 48 hours. An off-shore trough and a cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal will give rain in the region.
