Strong earthquake jolts Taiwan, kills at least 7 and over 150 injured

Earthquake in TaiwanA strong earthquake of magnitude 6.4 rocked Taiwanese city of Tainan during the wee hours of Saturday morning. At least, seven people including a 10-yearl old baby have been killed so far and around 150 people have been injured.

The earthquake had its epicenter at latitude 22.87°N and longitude 120.66°E, with depth of 23 km.

Reportedly, five aftershocks have been felt since the earthquake struck the city.

The powerful quake toppled several tall buildings across the city, while, number of buildings were leaning dangerously.

Rescue operations are underway and more than 220 people have been safely rescued from collapsed buildings. Relief shelters have been set up across the city to help the homeless people.

State authorities are fearing more number of casualties as several families had gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year.

According to experts, Taiwan is situated on the seismically active "Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire is referred to an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

Due its geographical location near the intersection of two tectonic plates, the country is subjected to tremors often.
