Steep drop in night temperature in plains of North India

In the last 24 hours there has been a nip in the air, particularly over parts of Punjab and Haryana. The minimum temperatures here have dropped by upto 15 degrees. The drop in minimum has forced light woolens to be taken out of the closets.

According to the temperature data available with Skymet, Bhatinda and Amritsar in Punjab recorded 14.8°C and 15°C as the night temperature, respectively on Thursday morning. Kapurthala also saw the minimum drop to 15°C.

In the neighbouring state Haryana Hisar recorded 14.7°C as the minimum, while Gurgaon saw the minimum settle at 15°C.

However, this drop in temperature is not permanent as a Western Disturbance is approaching the northern plains. By evening of October 24 parts of Punjab will start receiving some rain. And by October 25 and 26 the entire state including Haryana and Delhi will record some rain.

During this period the winds will change to become easterlies and cloud cover will play a vital role in pulling down the day temperature and pushing up the minimums by almost 2-3 degrees.

On October 28 another spell of scattered rain is expected in the region. As soon as this weather activity ends- by October 30 – the minimums will show a consistent drop. This is when we could say that winter has arrived.
