Heavy Monsoon rains to continue over Northeast India

Scattered light to moderate rain has blessed parts of East India on the second consecutive day as well. Most of the states falling under the eastern region of India have witnessed light to moderate showers in the last 24 hours as well.

In a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, few districts of Bihar had witnessed rainfall. For instance, Supaul observed 61.7 mm rainfall, Gaya observed 4.4 mm rains and Motihari witnessed 5.4 mm showers. During the similar time frame, Ranchi in Jharkhand witnessed 3.6 mm rains.

However, most districts of West Bengal have witnessed moderate showers with one or two light spells as well. These rains have occurred due to southerly moisture incursion winds blowing from the Bay of Bengal. These winds aided in the localized development of thunderclouds leading to downpour over the regions of East India particularly during afternoons and early evenings.

A cyclonic circulation is seen over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and adjoining areas extending up to 1.5 km above sea level. Moreover, a trough is also seen running from Bihar to Telangana across Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha.

In the wake of this weather system, scattered light to moderate showers are expected to continue in Bihar, Jharkhand and adjoining east Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Areas like Purnea, Bankura, Burdwan, Malda and Jalpaiguri may receive light rainy spells.

However, Dinajpur and Coochbehar are expected to witness moderate spells.

Cloudy sky along with humid weather conditions are also likely to prevail over most of the states of East India. Moreover, chances of easterly and southeasterly winds prevailing over these areas are also foreseen.
