Staggered Heavy Rainfall Over Mumbai Till Month End, Downpour Likely Next 48 Hours

June 20, 2022 1:59 PM |

Mumbai and the suburbs are expected to have heavy rainfall today and tomorrow. Bursts of heavy to very heavy showers are likely in the evening and night hours on both days. Santa Cruz observatory recorded 13mm and Colaba measured 67mm of rainfall yesterday. The rain continued this morning also over most parts of the city.

The city has not observed typical Mumbai rains so far in the season. Three-digit rainfall (>/=100mm)  in 24 hours becomes quite common during the monsoon season. Such a downpour has been elusive so far over the financial capital city and suburbs. The record observatory at Santa Cruz has seen 128mm of rainfall between the 01st and 19th of June. The monthly normal rainfall for June is 493.1mm.

Conditions have become favourable for staggered heavy rains during the remaining days of the month. Light to moderate rainfall is likely on all the days till 30th June. However, spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on 20th-21st, 24th-25th, and 28th-30th June. All these days have the potential of generating stormy rains, resulting deluges in some pockets.  Rainfall of 100mm or more in 24hr stands a good chance across many areas of the city.

A cyclonic circulation is marked over border areas of Rajasthan and adjoining region. This has resulted in westerly flow of winds along Konkan coast. Also, another cyclonic circulation is likely over West Bengal, Bangladesh and partly over Bay of Bengal.  This will help in building up surge along Konkan and Goa. Strengthening of the monsoon stream will lead to heavy rainfall all along the coastline of Konkan and Goa.

Santa Cruz and Colaba, both are likely to record heavy spells of rain and showers. Intensity of these showers will be more on the southern half of Konkan between Ratnagiri and Santa Cruz.  Alibag, Raigad, Borli, Murud, Dapoli, Diveagar and Harihareshwar are at bigger risk of heavy downpour. Rainfall across the northern suburbs from Palghar, Thane, Kalyan and up to Dahanu also remain susceptible to heavy rainfall over the next 48hr. Communication & connectivity, commute and aviation services may also take a hit on account of inclement weather conditions during this period.
